Pursuing a criminal known as the Viper, Prince Rasteem becomes suspicious when the Persian army easily conquers Dodrazeb. Princess Laneffri is desperate to expel the Persian invaders from her kingdom and she will stop at nothing to protect its secrets—especially the Origin Key. When Rasteem learns what the Origin Key can do, he must find a way to make the princess an ally to save both their kingdoms from annihilation.

I began this book not knowing what to expect. I thought I would be disappointed while reading the fir few chapters of the book. To put it plainly, it sounded like a history book. I usually don't put a book down once I start it (I rarely do it. As a matter of fact I only did it once). Thankfully, I stuck with it and it sucked me into a wonderful adventure with battles, bravery determination and of course evil (some love but what can you do)... At this point, it had me hooked and enjoyed the rest of the book Can't wait for the next adventure of the cast of this book.

The Origin Key Treasures of Dodrazeb Book 1 edition by SD McPhail Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

If I did not know from hearing the author discuss it herself, there is no way I would have known that this is a debut effort. The characters start as archetypes, but she keeps coloring them in with details until they finally come to life. Her writing is clear, the pacing brisk, and the dialogue very believable.

The best part is the setting. Many historical settings are modeled on Medieval, Greek, Roman, or even Egyptian civilizations, but very few have dealt with Ancient Persia. The very unfamiliarity lends an air of mystery to the tale. You can tell both from the book and from the author's other writings that she is very well versed in the history of this era.

Add to this fantastical elements that would feel at home in H.G. Wells or Jules Verne and you get an even more heightened sense of wonder.

The Origin Key is an excellent blend of action-adventure, palace intrigue, and mythic legend. I enjoyed reading it tremendously and look forward to future installments.
Treasures of Dodrazeb The Origin Key by Susan McPhail is a smart, intriguing tale that seamlessly melds historical fiction, fantasy, and suspense. The characters are well developed and their motivations are clear and internally consistent. Many contemporary authors fall back on a lazy portrayal of conflicts that depicts one side as wholly pure and the other as irredeemably corrupt--or worse, denies the reality of good and evil altogether. McPhail accepts the challenge of exploring the virtues and vices; strengths and weaknesses of her two warring nations. That touch alone sets The Origin Key above a large part of the field.

Highly recommended for fans of history, fantasy, and mystery stories.
Disclosure I received an advance review copy from the publisher.

The Origin Key is a good first novel. The pacing is excellent. The plot moves very briskly and kept me engaged from start to finish. The author doesn't waste the reader's time and provides something of substance on every page. The plot twists involving a major prophecy were also well done and provided a nice treatment of the problems with prophetic interpretation. The will-they-won't-they romantic tension between the protagonist Prince Rasteem and the princess of a conquered land is pretty trope-worthy, but is cute and well executed. It's also amusing to watch Rasteem react with wonder to technological advances that are commonplace to us. McPhail paints vivid pictures of the world she's created and engages all of the readers senses in the story.

So why only three stars? Rasteem left me cold. Rasteem is charged with keeping his nephew Kamran safe while he's learning to be a soldier. Rasteem is supposedly the more level headed of the king's sons, but at every turn he is smacking Kamran around and berating him, while only occasionally offering praise and encouragement. This is supposedly due to his intense concern for Kamran's safety, but Kamran is absent for a big stretch of the novel when the fighting is over. It seemed like a missed opportunity to show a mentoring relationship without Rasteem being a jerk. Rasteem also holds onto a misconception long after it should've been obvious that he was wrong. Finally, a plot point involving a figure from Rasteem's past fell flat to me. It strayed into deus ex machina territory and didn't really deliver much emotional punch.

Don't let the critical paragraph fool you, I'm only being thorough! I enjoyed the brisk pacing, engaging plot and vivid details. I would be interested in visiting this world again.
Very descriptive. I could easily imagined being in some of the battles! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great story teller!
I just finished reading your enthralling and mesmerizing book! I loved the panoramic descriptions of the architecture, geography, people, and culture. I felt transported to ancient times and vicariously experienced the beauty of it all. More books, please. Sherry Blanton
Fabulous! I loved this book. The story takes the reader to a whole new world, literally since Drodrazeb is the "Origin". As a bonus there's a lovely love story woven into the fabric of the story.

Ms. McPhail has an extraordinary way of putting the reader right into her vision. You feel as if you can see the world and feel the action as it happens around you. It's a wonderful read!
I'm anxiously looking forward to her next book.
